Most commonly, borderline personality disorder is confused with bipolar disorder however, while they may share similarities, the disorders are far from the same. The biggest difference between bpd and bipolar disorder is manic and depressive episodes. People suffering bipolar disorder experience mania and depressive episodes where there is a huge shift in emotions that last long periods of time such as days to months. People suffering from borderline personality disorder do not experience mania, instead they have short bursts of mood swings that can happen multiple times throughout a day. While a person with bipolar disorder may be stuck in a depressive episode for a couple weeks, a person with borderline personality disorder may only experience depression for a few hours.
