While there are common symptoms for Borderline Personality Disorder, the mood disorder can affect each individual suffering from it a little differently. For example, my mother had Borderline Personality Disorder and her main symptoms included a lack of restraint for controlling and regulating her emotions. This is a very common symptom of BPD, however, her lack of emotional regulation resulted in anger, depression, and anxiety which may not be the case for everyone. Individuals may be like my mother while others may only suffer from one of her symptoms or none at all. Additionally, people with Borderline Personality Disorder may also experience other conditions as well such as eating disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorder (McLean Harvard Medical School Affiliate, 2022).
Depending on what symptoms an individual with Borderline Personality Disorder suffers with, treatments may be different for them. People may seek medical treatments such as prescriptions or therapy, while others may try to self-treat through meditation, yoga, and reflecting on behaviors, while others may not believe they need treatment. Everyone's path with this mood disorder is different.
Therapy refers to the "treatment of mental or psychological disorders by psychological means" (Oxford, 2022). Therapy can include all different styles and techniques. For example, there is talk therapy in which individuals talk with a qualified professional one on one or with a group of people, in order to "help a person identify and change troubling emotions, thoughts, and behavior" (National Institute of Mental Health, 2022). Another form of therapy is dance therapy, where patients are able to express themselves through dance to therapeutically help them.
