Claim: Borderline personality disorder is a serious mood disorder that can lead to suicide if not properly treated.

4 to 9 percent of individuals with borderline personality disorder kill themselves which is higher than those with schizophrenia.

People suffering from schizophrenia are more likely to kill themselves than people with borderline personality disorder. According to the National Library of Medicine, at least 5 to 13 individuals with schizophrenia kill themselves.

In 1998, there was little understanding of borderline personality disorder and there still is minimal understanding today.

Thousands of different research studies, surveys, and trials have been administered in order to have a deeper understanding of borderline personality disorder and effective treatment today.

As many as 16 million Americans suffer from borderline personality disorder.

Due to mental health being stigmatized, not everyone suffering from a mental illness, such as borderline personality disorder, will seek help. Therefore, individuals with borderline personality disorder in the United States are likely much higher than 16 million.
